The Mutable Instruments Plaits is a complete reimagining of Mutable Instruments’ iconic voltage-controlled monophonic digital sound source, Braids. Featuring completely redesigned hardware and software, Plaits offers a more streamlined approach to sound generation than its predecessor. Plaits boasts additional CV inputs, three timbre-tweaking tools per model, and intuitive controls that allow you to seamlessly weave between synthesis techniques. Capable of creating complex sounds that typically require a full rack of oscillators, filters, VCAs, waveshapers and ring-modulators, Plaits packs a powerful punch into a surprisingly small package.

MODULATE YOUR BRAINS OUT

Plaits uses simple controls to create complex sonic landscapes. Toggle between all 16 synthesis modes with the touch of a button. Use the Frequency knob to create sounds that span across 8 octaves. Quickly dial-in the perfect texture with model-dependent tone controls. Transform your sound from dark and dense to bright and airy with the Timbre knob. Explores lateral timbral variations with the Morph knob, or use the Harmonics knob to add color and character to simple synth sounds. Featuring multiple CV inputs, a trigger input, two dedicated outputs, there’s no limit to what you can create with Plaits.

PITCHED SOUNDS

Plaits features unique eight synthesis models designed for pitched sounds like ripping leads, lush chords, and ethereal pads. Create otherworldly synth sounds using:

  • Virtual-analog synthesis of classic waveforms
  • Waveshaping oscillator
  • Two operator FM (two sine-wave oscillators modulating each other’s phase)
  • Two independently controllable formants
  • Harmonic oscillator
  • Wavetable oscillator with four banks of 8x8
  • An automatic chord generator
  • Vowel and speech synthesis

NOISE AND PERCUSSION

Plaits features eight additional synthesis models designed for noise and percussion sounds like kicks, snares and hi-hats. Creating synthetic beats using:

  • Granular sawtooth or sine oscillator
  • Clocked noise
  • 8 layers of particle noise
  • Inharmonic string modeling and modal resonator for rings
  • Analog bass drum model
  • Analog snare drum model
